My name is Kamal and I created this site from scratch in HTML in 2022. This site is a small project dedicated to the lost internet I grew up with- GeoCities, DeviantArt at its peak, beautiful Flash games (RIP) made by just one person. This internet was more customisable, more individual and unique. There was an endearing DIY-ness to design that's now fallen out of favour with the advent of professional website templates.
I called this website CyberCamp- a combination of the words "cyber" (meaning internet) and "camp", referring to the aesthetic sensibility of earnestness, tackiness, and delighting in shocking excessiveness. This website has been coded entirely from scratch by me, a beginner who really couldn't get the hang of it. I had to compromise form and function in the face of the limitations of my skill, but I like the final product. Honestly, it was pretty refreshing to not stress over how to make something look perfect. I knew it was gonna be a little ugly- it was intended to be a little ugly. But it's honest, and fun. I'd like to think if 10 year old Kamal could have created a website, this is what it might have looked like. He would have been pretty impressed with this one, anyway.
So- this is CyberCamp, in all its pixellated, eyestrain glory. Don't get lost.
